Understanding the nexus between forest dependence and willingness to pay for forest conservation: case of forest dependent households in Kenya

چکیده
Purpose Forests support human livelihoods and mitigate against climate change, yet they are at a risk of irreversible loss due to high degradation rates. The success forest conservation mechanisms depends on involvement by dependent communities. In this paper, the authors assess household's willingness pay (WTP) labour or cash for programme seeking restore degraded forestland in Mount Elgon Forest, Kenya. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 919 households Mt reserve, A double bounded contingent valuation approach was used examine households' WTP an ordered probit model estimate determinants WTP. Findings findings study show higher through days (12 days/month, equivalent 1800 KES/month) compared (KES 450/month). Forest dependence has significant influence activities. observed amongst with vulnerability (high shocks value, low asset value those poorest wealth categories) implying that more willing contribute conservation. Originality/value While emerging literature is growing, few studies have paid attention There limited use in-kind contribution as payment vehicle study's form suggesting importance embracing mechanism supporting contexts developing countries.

Spatial Heterogeneity of Willingness to Pay for Forest Management
The paper investigates the spatial heterogeneity of public’s preferences for the implementation of a new country-wide forest management and protection program in Poland. Spatial econometric methods and high resolution geographical information system data related to forest characteristics are used to explain the variation in individual-specific willingness to pay (WTP) values, derived from a dis...
متن کاملWithin- and between- sample tests of preference stability and willingness to pay for forest management
The assumption of the stability of preferences is a fundamental one in the theory of the consumer. Many papers within the stated preferences literature have tested this assumption, and have found mixed results. Individuals may become more sure of their preferences as they repeat a valuation task or purchase decision; they may also learn more about prices and quantities of substitutes or complem...

Trees are the most important biological elements of forest ecosystems. The variability of the tree species composition inhabiting in the Oriental beech forest, not only forms different forest types but also has a remarkable impact on the species diversity of forest floor plants, due to the existence of trees in the overstory layer. In this research, forest types of an an Oriental beech were ide...
